Barron Falls…wet season in the tropics
Yesterday was a washout and too wet n foggy to get the photograph of the falls I wanted. I returned early today before anyone else arrived and waited for the mist to clear. The falls are rather spectacular when Tinaroo dam overflows and the Barron river is in flood.
The Barron Falls drop 260 metres as its descends from the Atherton Tablelands to the Cairns coastal plain here in Queensland. The volume of water seen in this photo occurs after substantial rainfall during the wet season when the Barron river floods. For much of the rest of the year, little more than a trickle is evident, due in part to the presence of a weir behind the head of the falls that exists to supply the Barron Gorge Hydroelectric Power Station located downstream in the gorge proper.
